I recently purchased this coin Philip IV Tours mint 4.0 grams, rEference Duplessy 251, Ob: Central cross, PHILIPPVS REX - +BHDICTV:SIT:HOme:DHI:nRI:DEI:ihV:XPI, RE: Castle with cross above, fleur-de-lis border, TVRONVS CIVIS

Will anyone advise me on the scarcity, value and/or importance of this coin, if any?

Also, does anyone know the reputation of Gabriel Vandervort of
www.ancientresources.comLink (http)? As he is wanting to purchase this coin from me.

I greatly appreciate all comments and advice.

Kind Regards,

monkpiper

Isn't there a price given in the Duplessy catalogue ?

Try asking on the French forum. Somebody there must have one.

If Gabriel Vandervort pays you a reasonable proportion of the catalogue price, I don't see that his reputation matters. He might be worried about yours (will you send him the coin or not once he has paid? Is the coin genuine ?) .

Or you could auction the coin to ascertain its value by seeing what it fetches. This is an auction website.

I do not have the duplessy catalogue, I have only the reference number and I will ask on the French Forum, thank you.

I believe this coin to be quite genuine, he is offering me (in trade or cash) far above what I paid for it. I am new to trading and selling. I have only collected before.

Hence, my hesitation in someone who solicits me outside of "normal" auction channels. I believe my caution is prudent and as far as My Reputation, I believe in holding to the highest of standards, ethics, code of conduct and so forth........Of course I will send him the coin if we agree on terms or I may keep it myself, after all, I liked it, purchased it and would not have, just to turn around and sell it. That is not why I collect coins.

Thank you for your advice and I will attempt to locate the duplessy catalogue, I highly appreciate your help.

bonsoir MP,
where is this buyer located? if you accept his payment, i give this advice as a former usps employee who has listened to postal inspectors, make sure to be paid in a trackable insured manner or by PAYPAL or such. you can send the coin by registered mail to cover yourself as far as liabilities go. as i said in the other forum about a recent customer losing his money was because he did not follow good procedure. if this coin is very valuable, then i am sure my advice will be understood. good luck with your decisions.

bonjour cousin JPC,

thank you for your response to help our american friend. the coins are truly works of french art for such an early age. no wonder they are so highly sought after.

Philip VI 1293- 1360, not exactly an early age. Quite late in the Middle Ages.
But the query was about Philip IV , 1268-1314 .
Such coins were not a monopoly of France. This one is David II of Scotland, 1329-71, minted in Edinburgh.

« Cours : 30 s. t. » veut dire quoi ? Et « Titre » ?

Thank you Jpc83, but this clearly isn’t the same coin: the design, the inscription, even the king are different.
Is there another Duplessy 251, perhaps in another edition ?
Thanks anyway.
What do “ Cours : 30 s. t. ” and “ Titre ” mean ?

bonjour rogermo,

granted, the coins are similar. however, the workmanship of the dies is much more striking with the french coins, and seem to be more precise. the artisans have spent many more hours on their craft producing a quality product of the day. hence my observation. a result of the upcoming renaissance? or were the scots were just saving money as usual on man hours. :gna: :grimace:

bonjour MP,

yes, all this fuss has been about an elusive coin we have not seen. i am anxious to see this gem. i am not a coin collector but my brother, an international lawyer, is. and i have helped build a very nice coin collection for him buying many things on delcampe and feebay. he has a few gold coins, but not many. it seems the mexican gold of the 1940's is very affordable and very attractive. i like the rose color of their gold too. and again, the mexican cooking.

bonjour Rogermo,

Ah, so this larger coin was worth 30 sous tournois, just as an American quarter is worth 25 cents. And "Titre 1000" means theoretical gold content 100.0% . Thank you for that information. Any idea why this picture does not seem to be the right coin ?

As he says, he hasn’t seen the coin, but Monkpiper has described it, and I’ve translated that into French .
However, like Cajunsr, he is very reasonably demaning a scan (of both sides).

On attend.

bonsoir MP,
was this done with a digital camera and in b/w mode? or a scanner in b/w mode? and i would suggest a color picture with a closer detail. although this may be enough information for the cousin to use. i am a stamp collector and just like my images in color. b/w does help to show detail however. have a great evening. i can shut off my a/c tonight and open the windows. had super good thunderstorm to cool our evening off.
