The Austrian Red Cross Society was founded on March 14, 1880. This newly established aid organisation was faced with its first important peace-time task in 1882 when called in to help the victims of disastrous floods in Tyrol and Carinthia. In 1897, Vienna for the first time hosted an international Red Cross conference with participants from 32 countries. In World War I, the Red Cross played a central role in extending care to the sick and injured. After 1918, the organisation focused on aiding severely wounded war victims and veterans. The Austrian Youth Red Cross was founded in 1922. The Red Cross Law of June 27, 1962 enabled the Austrian Red Cross Society to represent Austria in all international Red Cross institutions. In 1970, the name of the Society was changed to "Austrian Red Cross". Today, one primary task of the Red Cross lies in ambulance and transportation services for injured persons. Health and social services, the organisation of blood donors and rescue services are other areas in which the Austrian Red Cross has excelled. The stamp motif shows the old and new symbol of the Austrian Red Cross.
