100th Anniversary of the Vienna Ice Skating Club

The Vienna Ice Skating Club (Wiener Eislaufverein - WEV) celebrated its 100th anniversary in 1967. However, this does not mean that Vienna´s skating tradition dates back a mere one hundred years. On the contrary, sliding across ice-covered expanses was a popular pastime already during the reign of Empress Maria Theresa. However, skating on public squares, outside these exclusive clubs, was forbidden. But as this sport had found fans amongst all professions, from officers to judges, skating on the Stadtpark ponds and on the grounds of Belvedere Palace was finally permitted by the Viennese police in the mid-19th century. However, in those days a skating lady might still become the talk of the town, especially if she wore trousers, a more comfortable but "scandalous" garment. WEV was founded on February 7, 1867 by a group of honourable gentlemen, many of them from aristocratic families. There are many ice skating clubs all over the world but none has produced as many world champions, European champions and Olympic winners as WEV. The history of Austrian skating is a proud one, with a total of 31 world titles, 44 European titles and 5 Olympic medals.
