Wild Water Regatta World Championships 1977

The canoe has a centuries-old tradition and was even familiar along the waterways of the Vikings. A collapsible boat with a canvas hide was invented by Heurich around 1900. In the 1930s the canvas was replaced by a new-fashioned rubber material, and asof 1965 canoes were produced mainly of polyester. The Austrian Kayak Association was founded on October 24, 1923. As it developed organizationally throughout the decades that followed, canoeing established itself as a competitive sport both in wild as well as in motionless waters. The first canoe slalom in Austria was held in 1934 in Mühltraisen bei St. Georgen. Austria was even represented in the first International Canoe Slalom Commission in 1936. After the Second World War all teams under the former Austrian Kayak Association came together under the Austrian Canoeing Association. The year 1972 was a milestone for the international canoe slalom, for it was admitted into the Summer Olympic Games. With the World Championships of 1977 in Lieser bei Spittal, Austria maintained it´s tradition in this competitive sport.
